The Blue Hole

Today our friend  arranged to take me to show me the Blue Hole...

.....I've heard many time of this place and always wanted to see it ...

...I wasn't disappointed,  it's very impressive...

...and actually quite scary if you get close to the edge.

Our friend describes this part Paros as the "End of the island". It is stunningly beautiful.

...and there is a lovely  little cove there...

...a secret place where pirate ships could hide perhaps?

Q: How do you play football when you live on a mountain?

A: First of all, you have to dig.

...football is obviously a game they are very enthusiastic about on Syros...

We have just been for a short visit, and discovered Syros to be very different from the our little Greek island...

...Although it's a small island, the main town of Ermoupolis has a city feel to it...

...and here are a few snaps we took while we were there....

Ermoupolis
Town Hall, Platia Miaoui

Always a lender or a borrower be ...

...I think that's what they said...

...but, anyway...

... that's what you need to be at the new library...

...located at the bus stop near the bridge over the dry riverbed on the way to Aylki...

... (an area known by some as " cul-de-Krystal")...

... with an excellent and interesting selection of literature...

...Thank you mountain folk ! ...

Lighten our darkness ....

We have so much olive oil we really don't know what to do with it...

... so one of our Greek friends has been showing us how to make a traditional lamp...

...that the Parian villagers used when he was a boy...

You take a dried Kalathropos flower (Common Mullien plant)...

...and float one of the little flowers upside down it in a little olive oil (only about 5 mm deep)...

...let it soak for a few minutes, light the stem and ...

...you have a little light!

All is well...

...well perhaps not all...

We've had an email from a friend...
..."Are you okay?" ... "What's going on?"...

We're good thanks...Mathaios brings us cucumbers and melons every other day...

... and Philipos called to us yesterday he gave us a big dish of sweet cherries from Lefkes and a bottle of his home-made wine...

We went for supper at Melinos and saw our friend Dimitri. (He is our oracle)...

... in answer to our questions, what's the latest news, what do you think will happen?...

...his answer is "it's all theatre, just wait and see"...

...He is a wise man.

..The village is busy...

...people take their volta (stroll) and stop for coffee or a drink...

We see Yia-yia sitting, watching the sunset... she sees us, taps the seat beside her, inviting us to join her...

..."Were you pleased to see Karin?" I ask her...

... she pats her heart, smiles and says something in Greek...she was  happy to see her friend...

We sit and watch the sunset with her...

...it's a good life here...

...all is well...

Life goes on....

Our May-day wreath

... Someone commented the other day that no one had mentioned the Greek crisis in their ex-pat blogs...

... Perhaps that's because in some places it's not that apparent...

... On our little island life goes on as usual...

... Holiday makers come and swim and sunbathe, the tavernas are busy and the shops are full...

... I went to town yesterday and there was no queue a the cash-point...

... The ATM dutifully paid out our weekly house keeping money from our Greek bank account ...

...This is what it is like here and I know there is hardship in  the cities  and towns where there are no jobs, no money and some people have lost their homes ...

...but I only know that because I read it in the papers and hear it on the news...

...I am not ignoring the crisis but can I only comment about what I see and know.

An egg and lemon sort of day...

Some days you think you'll do one thing ...

... and end up doing something complete differeny ...

... I was thinking this the other day while picking lemons as big as grapefruits  for a lovely old lady in the village.

I'd gone out to pick up a basket of eggs ... a gift from a friend ...

... then outside in her garden stood Yia-yia waving and calling "yoo-hoo"...

... "Limonia!" she had called ....

... "yes please" I replied ....

... She handed me an empty plastic crate and bid me "Ella, ella" as she led me to the Lemon tree ...

... My reward was a bag of lemons some bread and some baked eggs ..,

... The baked eggs were delicious ...

... brown and nutty ...

... yummy !

Καλό Πάσχα ! Happy Easter !

Well, I suppose Easter is as good a time as any to resurrect this old blog...

...It's been a long, cold and very wet winter on this little Greek island...

...but yesterday, bang on schedule, the sun came out and the grey skies disappeared...

...just in time for the Easter Barbecues...

Καλό Πάσχα !  ....Χριστός Ανέστη !
